Orbit Notebook / Night-sky notes

A small starting guide

A simple session for exploring unaided night-sky sketches and honest observation records, with room for your own observations.

A modest beginning

Keep a notebook and a local sky chart nearby and begin with sky patterns. Choose a small question about unaided night-sky sketches and honest observation records rather than trying to cover the whole subject at once.

Use a familiar accessible viewing place and begin with what is plainly visible to the unaided eye. Draw the horizon, nearby buildings and the open part of the sky. Record the date and local time. These are observation exercises, not forecasts or current sky charts; identify particular objects using a reliable chart for your actual place and time.

Make the note your own

Keep uncertain identifications marked as uncertain. Clouds, haze, surrounding light and the direction of view can change what you see. Use simple relative marks rather than inventing precise measurements. A repeated sketch from the same place can show a meaningful difference without requiring specialist equipment.

Choose a first page

A viewing direction gives you a concrete exercise. You can also browse the whole journal and begin with the subject closest to hand.
